women's rights

news on the women's rights front in the u.s., and in a set of videos looking at health care in mississippi, oakland police violence against women, and compensation for women in caregiving and housework, and in the continuing discussion following ann romney's remarks.

in the first news piece, and from today, rachel maddow discusses the state of health care in mississippi where infant mortality ranks greater than botswana.  rachel maddow speaks with dr. carl maddix, OB-GYN, who was removed and blocked from serving on the mississippi board of health because he provided occassional hospital access for women's clinic patients in the unlikely event that complications developed in any abortion procedure - and of course a patient needs the best access to a hospital under such circumstances.

in the next clip on women's (and human) rights, RT speaks with Occupy Oakland activist Laura Long about what actually happened in Oakland two days ago, and a growing concern with increased police militarization in that part of california.  may day observers are also concerned with at least one incident in which policemen, without apparent cause, chased a woman simply riding by on her bicycle, aggressively grabbed her off the moving vehicle, threw her on the ground, and arrested her, as bystanders videotaped the incident and started shouting, "Let her go! Let her go!" - and as the woman kept crying out, "I was just riding my bike!"  echoes of kafka - a video of the incident posted after the interview.

in the next segment, real news speaks with nancy folbre, professor of economics at the university of massachusetts, about the valuation of caregiving in our society.

below, a related video on "women's work" from a mid-april democracy now! interview with activist selma james who has long advocated compensation for housework:
